General Information

Glossop is a thriving market town with a rich history and some magnificent scenery.

Skirted by three sides of the Peak District National Park, Glossop is often referred to as “The Gateway of the Peak”.  Its convenient location and great facilities make the town an ideal stopping place for the thousands of walkers and tourists who enjoy visiting the park every year.

Manor Park also offers visitors an opportunity to experience some of the beautiful local countryside. Located a short distance from Glossop town centre, the park has formal gardens, woodlands, a river and a lake. It also features a fantastic miniature railway and recently refurbished play area for children and some wonderful sports facilities.

Shopping in Glossop is excellent, particularly if you’ve got an eye for a bargain. With a variety of outlets ranging from modern chainstores to established family-run shops, shopping in Glossop offers a pleasing combination of convenience and tradition. It also has outdoor and indoor markets, which offer an array of goods at great prices.

You’ll find some wonderful historic buildings in Glossop. The old town, which is referred to as Old Glossop, features a cluster of attractive 17th and 18th century cottages. Close to the Market Square, you’ll also find a Norman church with an 18th century sundial.

One of the town’s biggest social events is the annual Victorian Weekend, which occurs in September. The weekend includes many activities, including a window dressing competition. You can also expect to see plenty of locals getting into the Victorian spirit by dressing up in period clothing.

Glossop Carnival is also a much-loved local event. This annual event tends to occur in June or July and features a parade, alongside a range of other activities. The last carnival was a great success, boasting live music from local bands and displays from the RSPCA, Tameside Sea Cadets and more.

Glossop is a lively, beautiful and historic place with lush greenery and beautiful scenery. Their close-knit community are keen to welcome visitors to the town and delight in organising local events to encourage tourism.
