Tourist Information - Stockport Air Raid Shelters

Stockport - Stockport Air Raid Shelters

Stockport Air Raid Shelters on Chestergate are an authentic network of underground tunnels, which were built to provide shelter during the Second World War. The tunnels accommodated around 7,000 people nightly and are now re-open to the public, offering a taste of Britain during the Blitz.

Exploring the shelters and the adjoining museum is a moving experience. The unusual underground tunnels and touching museum exhibits show how Stockport's civilians struggled to cope with the harsh reality of war.
